DJI Launches A Global Drone Mapping Campaign For Heritage Sites

DJI Launches A Global Drone Mapping Campaign For Heritage Sites

    • by Stefan Gandhi

DJI Enterprise has announced the 2026 World Heritage 3D Conservation Initiative, a worldwide call inviting drone operators to capture natural and cultural landmarks as 3D flythrough videos. Running from 29 July to 3 November 2026, it puts drone based reconstruction at the centre of a conservation conversation that has largely belonged to museums and academic institutions, and opens a route for commercial operators to contribute to a global heritage record.

A Global Call To Map The World's Landmarks

The premise is simple. The sites that define our natural and cultural history are under constant, quiet pressure from erosion, storms, and ordinary wear, and a photograph records only how something looked rather than how it was built or how it is changing.

A measured 3D model does both. It captures geometry, scale, and surface condition at a fixed moment, which turns a creative capture into a conservation asset. DJI's framing is that operators worldwide already hold the equipment and the skills to build that record, and what has been missing is a reason to coordinate the effort.

The campaign supplies it. Operators choose a subject, survey it, reconstruct it, and publish the flythrough with the campaign hashtags. Entries are assessed across two categories, and the strongest work features in a global showcase in November.

Two Categories Open To Every Kind Of Landmark

DJI has deliberately drawn the categories wide, and that is arguably the most interesting decision in the whole announcement.

Natural Heritage covers mountains, lakes, forests, and any landscape valued for its ecology, geology, or scenic character. Cultural Heritage covers monuments and archaeological sites, but it explicitly extends to old villages, urban landmarks, and industrial sites as well.

That second category matters. A disused mill, a stretch of city wall, or a market cross carries the same weight in this campaign as a cathedral, which means an operator does not need access to a protected site or a headline monument to take part. For the UK in particular, where industrial heritage and vernacular architecture are dense on the ground and often poorly recorded, that opens a very large field.

What DJI Is Asking Operators To Produce

Submissions must be MP4 files generated in DJI Reality from a 3D model of the heritage subject, with 4K at 60fps recommended and a runtime between 30 and 300 seconds. Entries are published on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, or X carrying the hashtags #DJIMapYourHeritage and #DJIEnterprise.

DJI has been firm on authenticity. Using AI tools to fabricate or alter a 3D model or the video disqualifies an entry outright, positioning the campaign as a record of real places rather than a visual effects contest. Participants remain responsible for flying legally, and entering grants DJI the right to display and use the work worldwide on a perpetual, royalty free basis.

The production path runs through four stages. Mission planning around the terrain, data acquisition with a DJI aircraft, reconstruction in DJI Terra as a mesh, a 3D Gaussian Splatting scene, or a point cloud, then flythrough generation in DJI Reality. DJI Reality is free to download, so the only licensing cost sits in Terra.

    Prizes And The Campaign Calendar

The prize pool spans three awards. Excellence in Natural Heritage and Excellence in Cultural Heritage each carry an Osmo Pocket 4 Standard Combo, and a People's Choice award carries an Osmo 360 Standard Combo.

The campaign opened on 29 July. Submissions close on 10 October, the People's Choice winner is announced on 15 October, and the Excellence Showcase runs on 3 November 2026.

Why DJI Is Backing 3D Reconstruction

The initiative did not appear from nowhere. It follows a run of high profile deployments using DJI hardware for exactly this kind of documentation work.

On Mount Qomolangma, the Matrice 4E has surveyed the shifting Khumbu Icefall, with DJI Terra processing the data into centimetre level detail that helps route setters read a moving hazard before anyone steps onto it. In Guatemala's El Mirador Basin, the Zenmuse L3 on a Matrice 400 has penetrated rainforest canopy to reveal Maya structures hidden beneath.

Read together, those projects make the argument the campaign is built on. Drone based reconstruction has moved past visualisation into genuine survey and conservation territory, and DJI is using the initiative to put that shift in front of a much wider audience.

What It Means For UK Operators

For UK surveying, inspection, and mapping businesses, this is a marketing opportunity dressed as a competition.

A polished flythrough of a recognisable local landmark demonstrates capture planning, reconstruction quality, and output craft in a single asset, in front of a global audience rather than one client. Heritage bodies, local authorities, archaeological units, and architectural practices all commission this work, and few of them can picture the result until they see one.

The equipment case is straightforward. The DJI Matrice 4 Enterprise covers most heritage subjects, with a mechanical shutter and survey grade positioning suited to the overlapping capture clean reconstruction depends on. Sites where canopy obscures the structure are better served by the DJI Zenmuse L3, which resolves detail photogrammetry alone cannot reach.

    FAQs

What is the DJI World Heritage 3D Conservation Initiative?

It is a global campaign announced by DJI Enterprise inviting drone operators to capture natural and cultural heritage sites as 3D flythrough videos. The initiative runs from 29 July to 3 November 2026 and is split into Natural Heritage and Cultural Heritage categories.

How do I enter the DJI heritage 3D competition?

Capture a heritage site with a DJI drone, reconstruct it in DJI Terra, and generate a flythrough in DJI Reality. Publish the MP4 on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, or X with the hashtags #DJIMapYourHeritage and #DJIEnterprise, and follow the DJI Enterprise account on that platform.

When is the deadline for the DJI heritage initiative?

Submissions close on 10 October 2026. The People's Choice award is announced on 15 October, and the Excellence Showcase takes place on 3 November 2026.

Is DJI Reality free to use?

Yes. DJI Reality is free to download and works alongside DJI Terra, turning mesh models, 3D Gaussian Splatting scenes, and point clouds into flythrough videos at no licensing cost.

Can I use AI to enhance my 3D model for the competition?

No. Using AI tools to fabricate or alter 3D models or video content disqualifies an entry. DJI requires submissions to be authentic reconstructions built from genuine survey data.

    Final Thoughts

The World Heritage 3D Conservation Initiative is a smart piece of positioning from DJI, and it happens to be genuinely useful. It gives commercial operators a public stage, it builds a distributed record of sites that deserve one, and it does so using a workflow most mapping teams are already running. With submissions open until October, there is time for UK operators to pick a subject worth documenting properly and produce something that outlasts the campaign itself.
