Why Does The DJI Matrice 4T Fly Backwards On Patrol Routes?

Why Does The DJI Matrice 4T Fly Backwards On Patrol Routes?

    • by Megan Wood

If you've watched a DJI Matrice 4T run an automated patrol route, you may have noticed it spends a lot of the flight going backwards. Here's why that's deliberate, and how Vision Assist lets you see exactly where the drone is heading.

Backward flight is a feature, not a bug

Patrol routes let the Matrice 4T fly a set path, run AI detection and report what it finds without constant input from the pilot. To do that efficiently, the aircraft avoids U-turns. Instead of spinning round at the end of each leg, it simply reverses.

    That has three practical benefits:

    • The gimbal stays locked on the target, so your camera never swings away from the asset you're monitoring.
    • AI detection stays active for the whole flight, with no gaps while the drone turns.
    • You save time and battery on every leg.

The trade-off is that your main camera view shows where the drone has been, not where it's going. That's where Vision Assist comes in.

How to use Vision Assist on the DJI Matrice 4T

Vision Assist shows a live view from the Matrice 4T's vision sensors, so you can check the airspace around the aircraft while the main camera stays on the job. DJI says the Matrice 4 Series offers a five-directional Vision Assist view, plus a downward view.

    Here's the key tip:

    • Press and hold the R3 button on the remote controller to open a split-screen view.
    • One side shows your wide or telephoto camera. The other shows the Vision Assist view.
    • The Vision Assist view switches automatically with your flight direction, so when you fly backwards, you see behind the drone.
    • Press an arrow to lock the view to one direction.

It gives you a clearer picture of your surroundings before you commit to a manoeuvre, which is especially useful for new pilots getting used to automated routes.

Know the limits, and when to add more sensing

Vision sensors can struggle to detect thin wires and glass surfaces, and DJI states that Vision Assist is for reference only. If you're flying in low light or near power lines, consider fitting the DJI Matrice 4 Obstacle Sensing Module, which adds rotating LiDAR (laser-based distance sensing) and millimetre-wave radar to the aircraft's vision system.

Even with the module, DJI notes that very thin objects, such as wires under 12 mm in diameter, may not be detected, so careful route planning still matters.

    FAQs

Why does the DJI Matrice 4T fly backwards on patrol routes?

It avoids U-turns, which keeps the gimbal locked on the target, keeps AI detection running and saves time and battery.

How do I open Vision Assist on the Matrice 4T?

Press and hold the R3 button on the remote controller to open a split-screen view alongside your main camera.

Can Vision Assist detect power lines?

Vision sensors may struggle with thin wires and glass, so fit the Matrice 4 Obstacle Sensing Module when flying near power lines or in low light.
