    The Six Workstreams Behind Integrated Airspace

    The ConOps identifies six problems that all have to be solved together, each with its own workstream.

    Electronic Conspicuity develops the standards for how uncrewed aircraft broadcast their position and receive information about surrounding traffic. Detect and Avoid defines the capability requirements for acting on that information.

    Command and Control establishes the performance requirements for the link between a drone and its remote pilot. In a BVLOS operation that link must stay reliable throughout the flight, and the aircraft must respond safely if it is lost. This workstream defines what reliable means in practice and what contingencies are required.

    System Wide Information Management sets the standards governing how data flows between operators, traffic management services, and air traffic management systems. Without consistent information exchange, the other capabilities cannot work as an integrated system.

    UAS Traffic Management develops the digital services framework covering flight authorisation, conflict resolution, and airspace awareness for multiple operators flying at once. This is what allows many operators to share airspace without each needing individual air traffic control clearance.

    Ground Infrastructure complements airborne surveillance with ground based capability including ADS-B receivers, multilateration, and broadcast services such as TIS-B.

    What This Means For UK Operators And Manufacturers

    For operators already flying BVLOS, the direction is toward risk based approval pathways that are faster, more proportionate, and designed to scale. An operation in lower risk airspace will need lighter mitigations than one in complex, higher risk airspace. The scenarios in the ConOps show the conditions the CAA is working toward, and reading them now is the clearest way to understand what your operations may need to look like.

    For manufacturers, the ConOps sets out what the architecture will demand of products. Conspicuity equipment cannot simply broadcast a drone's position, it has to receive traffic information as well. Collision avoidance systems must meet performance standards tied to the risk level of the airspace. Command and control links must hit defined reliability thresholds and fail safely rather than silently, and interoperability with traffic management services is a baseline requirement, not an optional extra.

    What Happens Next

    The CAA has set out three horizons. In the short term, individual workstream policies and technical documentation keep developing alongside early testing. In the medium term, an integrated testing programme combines those technologies in progressively more realistic scenarios. In the long term, final policies are published, enabling routine BVLOS operations within integrated UK airspace.
