Custom AI Detection Could Change How You Use The Matrice 4
- by Megan Wood
The DJI Matrice 4 series can already spot vehicles and vessels using built-in AI. What if it could also recognise the exact things your team looks for? That's the idea behind custom AI detection.
What is Matrice 4 custom AI detection?
Custom AI detection lets you run your own trained AI models directly on the drone. DJI calls this the Intelligent Computing Platform. It gives developers access to the computing power built into the Matrice 4 series, plus tools for deploying their own detection algorithms.
Once a model is deployed, the drone can recognise subjects in its live video feed in real time. Results appear in the DJI Pilot 2 app, so the pilot sees detections as they happen.
How it works
DJI sets out a four-step process:
- Get the model source code. Start with the model framework DJI provides.
- Train the model locally. Use your own images and data to teach the model.
- Upload it to the DJI developer platform.
- Deploy it to the drone. The model is quantised, which means compressed to run efficiently on the drone's onboard chip, and then sent to the aircraft you choose.
Your data stays yours
For many organisations, data security is the first question. DJI states that it doesn't take part in model training, doesn't provide a cloud inference platform and doesn't save training samples. Training happens on your side, with your data.
What could you detect?
DJI's examples show how flexible the platform is:
- Construction and safety: hard hat recognition
- Infrastructure: road defects and manhole covers
- Energy: solar panel detection
- Emergency response: flames and smoke
- Environment: wildlife detection with thermal imaging
- Transport: traffic congestion
Instead of a pilot or analyst reviewing hours of footage, the drone flags what matters during the flight. That saves time on site and speeds up decisions.
FAQs
What is the DJI Intelligent Computing Platform?
It's DJI's platform that gives developers access to the Matrice 4's onboard computing power so they can deploy their own AI detection models.
Does DJI see my training data?
No. DJI states it doesn't take part in model training and doesn't save training samples.
Where do AI detections appear?
In the DJI Pilot 2 app, in real time, as part of the live video feed.
