    AirData Adds 10 Minute Rewind To Drone Live Streaming

    AirData has added recording and rewind to its Live Streaming platform, and the headline capability is a 10 minute rewind that lets anyone joining an active stream scroll back through what they missed without interrupting the mission. Alongside it come automatic cloud recording and a retroactive record function that captures up to 10 minutes of video from before the moment someone pressed record.

    It is a small sounding feature set that solves a problem every live drone operation has run into, and it is worth understanding why.

    The Problem With Live Drone Video

    Live streaming from a drone has always had a structural flaw. The stream is ephemeral. If the incident commander joins the feed ninety seconds after the aircraft arrived on scene, those ninety seconds are gone as far as they are concerned. If a supervisor is pulled into a call and comes back three minutes later, the same. The most important footage in an unfolding situation is almost never captured while the right person is watching.

    AirData CEO Eran Steiner put it plainly. In a live operation, the most important moment does not wait for the right person to start record.

    The traditional workaround is to rely on the onboard recording and review the SD card afterwards. That works when the aircraft comes home in one piece and someone has time to pull the card. It does not work when the decision needs making now, and it does not work at all when the drone is lost, crashed or the card is damaged.

    What The Three New Features Do

    The update adds three related capabilities. Cloud recording saves the livestream automatically as it runs, creating a copy of the footage that exists independently of the aircraft. Rewind lets a viewer on an active stream move back through up to 10 minutes of prior footage while the stream continues. Retroactive recording allows an operator to start a recording after an event has already begun and still capture up to 10 minutes of the video that preceded the decision.

    That last one is the quiet workhorse. Most operational footage becomes important retrospectively. Nobody knows in advance which routine patrol turns into evidence.

    Why Cloud Redundancy Changes The Risk Picture

    Because the video uploads to the cloud in real time, the recording is not dependent on the aircraft surviving the flight. If the drone crashes into a river, is lost beyond recovery or comes back with a corrupted SD card, the footage is still there.

    For anyone running Drone as First Responder programmes, that is a material change to the risk assessment. DFR aircraft fly to incidents, often in poor conditions, frequently over terrain where recovery is difficult. The footage those aircraft capture may end up in an incident review, a coroner's inquest or a court. Losing it because the airframe was lost is a bad outcome that is now avoidable.

    The same reasoning applies to utilities inspecting assets in remote locations and to any operation where returning to site to refly is expensive.

    It Is Not Locked To One Manufacturer

    AirData Live Streaming supports RTMP, RTSP and SRT video streams, which means it is not tied to a single drone ecosystem. Mixed fleets work. Third party hardware works. Dock based systems work.

    That matters more than it used to. A lot of UK public safety and utility operations have ended up with mixed fleets by necessity, running different aircraft for different jobs and, in some cases, different manufacturers for procurement or security reasons. A streaming layer that sits above the hardware rather than inside it is considerably easier to standardise on.

    Admin Controls And Data Handling

    For UK organisations the governance side is usually the sticking point, and AirData has built in the controls that normally get asked about in a data protection impact assessment. Administrators can configure storage locations, set retention policies, apply PIN protection to shared streams, set expiration dates on links and share access by QR code.

    Retention policy and storage location are the two that tend to decide whether a system passes internal review. Drone footage frequently captures people who are not the subject of the operation, and a platform that lets you set a defined retention window and control where the data physically sits is far easier to justify than one that does not.

    The QR code sharing is a practical touch for handing a live feed to someone arriving on scene without adding them to an account first.

    Who This Is Aimed At

    AirData is targeting public safety agencies and DFR programmes, utility companies, infrastructure inspection operations and remote or dock based deployments. Those share a common shape. Multiple people need to see the same feed, they join and leave at different times, and the footage has evidential or compliance value after the fact.

    Chad Tillman, UAS Coordinator at Huntsville Police Department, described Record and Rewind as a tremendous new tool for capturing events as they unfold, which is a fair summary of the use case.

    The features are available immediately to existing AirData Live Streaming customers, who can request a trial. New organisations need to go through the enterprise sales team. No pricing has been published.

    What UK Operators Should Consider

    Anyone evaluating this should think about three things. First, where the data is stored, because that determines whether it fits your data protection position. Second, whether 10 minutes of rewind is enough for your operational tempo, since an incident that runs for an hour will still need the full recording rather than the rewind buffer. Third, whether your existing transmission setup can deliver a reliable stream from the locations you actually fly in, because cloud recording depends on having connectivity in the first place.

    That third point is the one most often underestimated. A rural substation inspection with marginal mobile coverage will not produce a clean cloud recording, and the onboard card remains the primary record in those conditions.

Combined with cloud recording that survives the loss of the aircraft and retroactive capture for events that only become significant in hindsight, it makes live drone video considerably more useful as an operational and evidential tool.
